Adult Basic Education [ABE]
Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes for adults (16 years+) who want to improve their basic reading, writing, and math skills and/or prepare for ASSET/COMPASS college placement tests.

ABE Reading and writing are integrated to give students the foundation for effective communication.
- Reading instruction emphasizes comprehension, vocabulary development, and critical thinking, graphic, and study skills.
- Writing skills include the review and application of language and grammar rules, correct usage and spelling, and paragraph development.
- Math instruction includes skill development in whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, algebra, and geometry with an emphasis on solving word problems and analyzing data in graphs, charts, and tables.
Assessment, placement and registration take place the first day of class each quarter.

Classes are typically available at the West Seattle SSCC campus and our New Holly site on Beacon Hill.
Note: Beginning fall quarter 2004, non-credit Adult Basic Education classes will have a $25 per quarter fee.

General Education Development [GED]
GED classes for adults (16 years+) whose reading, writing, and math skills indicate they're ready to start preparing for the five (5) GED test subjects:
- Reading (Literature)
- Writing (Grammar & Essay)
- Math

- Science
- Social Studies

GED classes provide students with a general review of the five GED content areas. Reading and writing are integrated to give students the foundation for effective communication.
- Reading instruction emphasizes critical reading, thinking, and graphic skills.
- Writing skills include the review and application of language mechanics, usage, and sentence structure as well as organizational skills in order to write effective paragraphs and 5-paragraph essays.
- Math instruction includes skill development in whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, algebra, and geometry with an emphasis on solving word problems and analyzing data in graphs, charts, and tables.
GED Testing Fees & Information:
- Starting July 1 2004, each GED test will cost $15 or $75 for all 5 GED tests.
- All students must fill out a GED application prior to taking first GED test.
- Students 16-18 years old must have high school release form signed by designated school employee before taking first GED test.
- Students may need to purchase their textbooks.

- Qualifying students can take GED classes through the Career Link Academy.

Course Fees:
Starting Fall Quarter 2004, September 27th, all ABE and GED students will be assessed a $25 registration/tuition fee each quarter for up to 18 non-credit class hours.
